College Internship - DSO Systems and Performance Intern

Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking one (1) graduate student intern to join the Development Services Office (DSO), within SPU's Project Delivery and Engineering Branch (PDEB). The Systems & Performance Intern will learn about and assist with various components of work volume and performance reporting, internal data systems, data management and quality control, and data visualization. DSO assists private developers in connecting to SPU’s water service infrastructure while adhering to SPU standards and governing codes.

As the Systems & Performance Intern, you will play a large role in helping the DSO reimagine its workflow monitoring and performance tracking reporting by displaying data in new ways. The intern will assist in the development and visualization of current and new work performance and status reports and play an important role in ensuring accuracy and reliability of reporting in multiple complex systems by evaluating, updating, and managing crucial data. This role offers a unique chance to gain professional

experience with data entry, data synthesis, and data visualization; and with creating and/or improving reports that present complex data in a simplified, accurate manner to a variety of audiences, from front-line staff to executives.

Internship Learning Objectives Include But Are Not Limited To

Professional

experience with, and practical application of, data analysis and report creation. Practical application of data visualization

skills for a variety of internal audiences. Provide support services to systems and project coordination teams. Familiarity with SPU organizational purpose, structure, and mechanisms; familiarity with the DSO’s functions and work teams. Professional

experience at one of the nation’s leading public utilities.

There is currently one (1) internship opportunity available, at the graduate level. The internship is for up to two (2) years or graduation, whichever comes first. This internship is expected to start no earlier than June 2024.

We require a minimum 1-year commitment for this internship.

Hourly Rates

Graduate - $24.57

Responsibilities

The Intern Will Work With Professionals In Activities Such As

Analyze data and use findings to make recommendations that will inform leadership decisions. Generate new ways of displaying DSO data by creating visually appealing reports and/or templates. Perform data cleanup and data entry critical to operational business needs. Identify and implement new ways to create useful performance and work status reports using data from disparate, complex systems. Create and implement a plan for managing shared electronic records. Research and identify publications, reports, and presentations from the development and construction industry appropriate for use in internal forecasting reports. Learn basics of internal systems such as Development Services System (DSS), Accela, and Maximo to gain familiarity with DSO data. Review and make recommendations and edits to existing job aids, data, reporting, and internal processes.

Qualifications

Education: Must be a graduate level student pursuing a degree in in Data Analytics, Public Administration, Computer Science, Data Visualization, Business Administration, or related field.

Graduate students must be enrolled on either a part-time or full-time basis and maintain a 3.0 GPA for the duration of the internship.

Exception: Students are not required to be enrolled during the summer sessions but must provide documentation of continued Fall enrollment at end of Spring quarter.

Additional Information

Hours: During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (15-20 hours per week). The internship opportunity may permit up to 40 hours per week during breaks and summer months. Work is normally between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday.

These Internships Allow For The Flexibility Of A Hybrid

work schedule. During breaks, interns may work up to 40 hours per week and will be required to come into the office twice a week. However, while school is in session, individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
